Highlights and events in Schenna

The sun terrace over Meran

Schenna lies on the sunny hillside above Meran, South Tyrol, nestled between vineyards and orchards, 600 metres above sea level. Over the past 50 years, what was once a rural community has developed into one of the most important tourist resorts in South Tyrol. The successful fusion of nature, tradition and culture makes Scena the perfect setting for an unforgettable holiday.

A bit of history
The name Schenna first appears in documents from the 12th century. It is of Roman origin and probably derives from the Latin ‘scaene’ (stage-like structure). There is no doubt that there were already settlements here in Roman times, as indicated by coin finds.

Customs and tradition in Scena

To be present is a matter of honour, to participate is a matter of course.
In Scena, customs are not an annoying duty, but a cherished and lived tradition, in which young and old are deeply rooted. That is why the people of Scena do not just wear the old traditional costumes at festive processions.

Did you know that the red and green ribbons on the hats of men's costumes have the following meaning?

  • Green ribbon on hat: already engaged and married
  • Red ribbon on hat: still available... but beware, the men in the gang all wear hats with red ribbons for aesthetic reasons... so the story remains compelling!

Schenna Castle
The majestic Schenna Castle, above Meran, is surrounded by a moat that is still partially visible. It can be visited except for the wing with the private rooms of the count's family. The halls and stately rooms house a gallery of paintings and portraits, a collection of weapons and numerous art-historical exhibits relating to the history of Tyrol.

The evening tours on Mondays and Thursdays are particularly popular.
